BBC1 first aired on 2 November 1936 under the name the BBC Television Service. It wasn’t until 1964 that the channel was renamed as BBC1. This was because the BBC2 channel went live in this year.
BBC1 has been the home of many treasured TV programmes. Who can forget classics such as Eastenders, Doctor Who, All Creatures Great and Small, Open All Hours, Pebble Mill, Panorama, Neighbours, Watchdog, Casualty, Holby City and Blue Peter.
With a current annual budget of over one billion pounds (funded via the license fee) the channel has the means to continue to develop world class TV programmes and recent additions include Strictly Come Dancing, The One Show, Big Brother, The Voice and Bargain Hunt. In recent years the BBC I Player was launched allowing you to view programmes that had already aired. BBC1 is of course the home of Sir David Attenborough’s ground breaking wildlife series which are some of the most watched programmes in the world. The list of his series is long and includes, Life on Earth, Planet Earth, The Blue Planet, Zoo Quest, The Trials of Life, Life in the Freezer, The First Eden, and the Life series (Life of Mammals, The Life of Birds, Life in the Undergrowth…..). In addition BBC1 also attracts some the most prestigious sporting events; The Olympic Games, Wimbledon, The Grand National, F1, Football League and Rugby.
