Channel 4’s stated aim is to “foster the new and experimental in television” which it has a successful track record of doing. Big Brother was the first reality TV programme to be broadcast in the UK and it was (and still is) produced for channel 4. At the time it was revolutionary and an instant success. The reality format has now been copied by every other channel in the UK and worldwide. Channel 4 has added several more reality series to it’s schedule the most popular being Made in Chelsea. Channel 4 also has a proven track record of producing interesting, original and quirky series; recent ones being Crashing, Crazyheads, Chewing Gum and Misfits. Channel four has made real efforts to increase the diversity of its programming and characters. There is a much greater range of ethnicities in it’s programming in more prominent roles and lacking the usual stereotypical character traits. This compares very favourably to ITV which has a very poor diversity. Channel4 also transmits more mainstream programming and a wealth of incredibly original comedy programmes like its hit series The IT Crowd, Fresh Meat, The Inbetweeners, Green Wing, Spaced, Hollyoaks, 8 out of 10 cats and The Undateables. In addition to it’s original programmes Channel 4 are also excellent at importing great series like The Big Bang Theory and Young and Hungry.
